Why do people always have to give things names – like
orthorexia, the coined phrase that describes the obsession of eating healthy?
Come on. Reading Babble.com the other day there was a post about
orthorexia. Obsessing is the key word here, as in Obsessive Compulsive-Eating Disorder
and should be treated as such rather than frightening people into thinking that
if you eat healthy and whole foods you’ll starve yourself.
Claiming eating healthy or simply raw foods is a disorder is
almost like what General Motors did with their electric car the EV1. That is to say, they got scared the world would stop using fuel so they withdrew every single electric car from the market
and took back EV1's from “owners” burying them the Nevada desert. Sounds like
a conspiracy to me – is the fast foods industry upset that more people are
actually starting to care about their diets and taking a genuine interest in a
slow food?
Jamie Oliver’s winning 2010 TED presentation discusses how the
US is killing its occupants through fatty foods and how we need to eat better
IE: healthy- that means learning to include fruit and vegetables rather than
consuming fried, fast and frozen bar foods.
The girl mentioned in the Babble article (originally taken
from a Time piece), was anorexic becoming obsessed soon after her doctor told her to eat healthy. No
one has ever stated that you can survive on raw broccoli alone. Her
interpretation of healthy meant eating nothing but one kind of raw vegetable.
When someone obsesses this much its OCD. I think her mental
health is what’s really the cause of her drastic weight loss – 68lbs is
extremely low for a 5”4 woman. Ones state of mind should be analyzed before
people start attacking healthy eating.
The entire world once ate
“healthy” – 30 years ago to be exact, when our foods were grown fresh
without genetically modified elements and people cooked from scratch at home.
Today we are a nation of fast food junkies and eating on the go is a favourite
past time. 30 years ago people weren’t diagnosed with orthorxia because it didn't exist. We ate
how we were are meant to: healthy.
Enjoy eating, it’s a part of life. Here are three great
books worth reading to learn more about diet and eating healthy without leaving
you obsessing. The Optimum Nutrition Bible, Real Food for mother and
baby & The Conscious Kitchen.
