If you missed my post
earlier in the week about Q Collection Junior, a line of furniture and organic cotton
bedding for babies and toddlers here’s a
quick round up.
Q Collection Junior is
without a doubt the best green baby bedding and furniture available. Why? Because their cribs go through rigorous 3rd party material
testing and certification and remain the only collection endorsed by the
leading non-profit focused on children’s environmental health – Healthy Child, Healthy World. The furniture
collection includes cribs (all of which convert to toddler beds), changing
tables, dressers, stackable storage, a glider & ottoman. The bedding
collection includes crib sets (with reversible bumpers and skirts), pillows and
individual sheets. Some of which you can buy from me!
The main thing that sets Q Collection Junior apart is that they were founded on the mission to provide the healthiest, most environmentally friendly children’s home furnishings. It wasn’t an add-on later. In an era when ‘greenwashing’ has sadly become very common, Q Collection Junior knows it’s not enough to just claim their designs are the healthiest which is why they back that up with rigorous, independent, 3rd party testing like testing a piece of furniture for 72 hours in a sealed chamber, measuring down to the parts per billion what chemicals are present. Only if it passes the tests, does it then become an approved material for Q Collection Junior. Which is why I love, use and recommend Q Collection Junior and sell it. To shop a selection visit my Haute Mama OpenSky Shop.

HM:
What is Q Collection Junior and when did you launch it?
JJ: Q Collection Junior is our
children’s line of furniture and organic cotton bedding, launched in 2007. We believe it is the healthiest, most
environmentally friendly collection available, or is as we say – PEOPLE
SAFE. PLANET SAFE. Our cribs were the first to go through
rigorous 3rd party material testing and certification and we remain
the only collection endorsed by the leading non profit focused on children’s
environmental health – Healthy Child, Healthy World The furniture collection includes
cribs (all of which convert to toddler beds), changing tables, dressers,
stackable storage, a glider & ottoman. The bedding collection includes crib sets (with reversible
bumpers and skirts), pillows and individual sheets. Some of which you can buy from me!
HM: Why did you decide to introduce a nursery collection?
JJ: The idea for Q Collection Junior
came to us in early 2006 from two sources. First, given our unique focus on removing toxic and
potentially toxic materials, we continually had customers of our adult line
asking if we designed for children. Second, I was in the process myself of
having a child. Having spent so
much time learning what materials are typically used in furniture construction,
I was really shocked to find that in children’s furniture more consideration
wasn’t given to the use of materials that had been proven to be safe. It seemed like an obvious next step for
us.
HM: Q Collection Junior has
beautiful well priced organic cotton bedding separates as well as a lovely line
of full sets. Why organic cotton and not bamboo?
JJ: The main reason we started with certified organic cotton is because we believe it offers the most transparency on use of the healthiest materials with the highest level of quality. The organizations certifying around cotton are well established and trusted. A concern remains for us with the use of bamboo in bedding as the process that takes the bamboo fibers down to yarn often relies on very harsh, toxic chemicals. We may introduce bamboo fiber bedding in the future but we will need to gain greater trust in the processing.
HM: What are your furniture pieces made from? Is the wood FSC
and are your finishes non toxic. Please expand on the paint and glues/joinery.
JJ: All of our materials go through a
three step review process, including:
This involves producing a piece of furniture and testing it for 72 hours
in a sealed chamber, measuring down to the parts per billion what chemicals are
present. Only if it passes the
tests, does it then become an approved material for Q Collection Junior.
HM: What new this year for Q Collection Junior? Will you expand to include a children’s collection?
HM: Is there anything else you might like to add?
If you are in NYC, you can see everything in person at Q Collections showroom on 21st & Broadway.

The Meatrix, a short animated film translated into over 30 languages, is a worldwide phenomenon! The film spoofs The Matrix while illustrating the problems with industrial agriculture and today’s meat supply.
My six year old son LOVED it and asked me if it was true..."Is that really what happens to farm animals?" Yes was my response. The film prompted several questions and we re-watched it eighteen more times!
The Meatrix is a smart little film using pop culture and entertainment to educate viewers about the food they eat and where it comes from. Join people around the world to help support family farms.

We all have plastic toys. Whether you bought them for yourself or you were given them as gifts. But what do you do with them once your child has stopped playing with them?
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of this years Earth Day Second Chance Toys, in partnership with The New York Kids Club, will be hosting a toy drive April 12th-April 22nd at each of their six locations.
Second Chance Toys is a community-based initiative that rescues unwanted plastic toys that are gently used and distributes them to children in need through local community organizations. With Earth Day on April 22nd you have the opportunity to teach your child the benefit of helping the planet while at the same time helping those less fortunate. If each family donated just one toy, think what a difference we could make. The toys must be plastic only, must be clean, no small or missing parts and battery powered toys must be fully operational.
Drop boxes are in the lobby of each New York Kids Club location for the next two weeks, so please give any gently used plastic toys that a child in need could enjoy. Thank you.

Yeah, SAMA Baby’s organic baby basics collection is now for
sale in my OpenSky Shop! This is fabulous news because SAMA Baby is one of my all
time favourite organic baby and children’s wear designer. And, they’re quite
hard to come by so I’m especially thankful to offer you this wonderful baby
basics collection. I can now offer you everything from onesies and footsies to
blankets and tiny little newborn hats.
My friends Shivani and Neha were inspired by
their Indian heritage to create SAMA Baby. They chose the Sanskrit word Sama,
which means balance, calmness and serenity and fully describes their hopes
and goals in creating a clothing line for babies and children revolving around
harmony of the mind, body and spirit.
You can really feel the
difference in the cloth. It is super soft and has a naturally very luxurious
texture to it. My baby loves snuggling in her blanket, and I of course love
dressing her in SAMA Baby because I know there won’t be any toxic dye residue, bleach or chemical softeners
potentially entering her skin. My son, almost six, wears SAMA Baby’s new
organic cotton denim jeans, and he loves them! Look out for the denim in my
shop very soon.
I want to offer SAMA Baby
for two main reasons: 1) It’s a sustainable clothing company and perfect for
your little ones. 2) It’s priced
extremely well for high quality organic clothing. Prices points start in the
mid twenties.
The basics collection comes in light pink, baby blue, sage
green and vanilla. I just love them, so soft and they wash very well. Sizes
tend to run a little on the smaller side – think somewhere between Tea and
Petit Bateau.
I hope you love SAMA Baby as much as I do. Come shop with me on OpenSky: A new way to shop.

I’m a huge
breastfeeding advocate. Every time I feed my baby I thank life for this
wonderful gift that only women can do. I’ve been blessed with a good milk
supply but I have many friends that haven’t been so fortunate which is why I
always recommend Mamatini.
Back in February I
wrote about Mamatini, created by Erica Duignan
Minnihan and inspired by her own nursing experiences. “It was a drink I wished
I’d had when I was breastfeeding. I was really just sick and tired of brewing
teas 3-4 times a day". With an
interest in holistic wellness Erica knew there were a lot of great homeopathic
ingredients (like Micronutrients, fennel & fenugreek) that could be taken
to help with energy and overall health. Erica consulted with her pediatrician
homeopath mother to formulate a "wonder-drink" for the breastfeeding
mom that would provide vitamins, mineral absorption and increased breastmilk.
“I thought this was something other moms would really embrace, as there
has not been a ton of marketing done around natural ingredients that can
support milk production”.
One
of the key ingredients is fenugreek - A herb that has been used for centuries
for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The exact mechanism for increases
milk production is unknown, but it has been proven to increase production by up
to 800%.
And
because I love it so much, I’ve added it to my new OpenSky shop to sell. As a
special promotion I’m offering one free case. A case contains 12 bottles and is
valued at $40. All you have to do is click on this link for a chance to win: http://promos.theopenskyproject.com/hautemamatini. One winner will be generated at random and
notified within 48hrs of entering. Everyone else who enters will receive a 10%
off discount on any item in my shop. The coupon expires one week from today so
please come shop with me!
If there are any
items you think I should know about and sell, please share the love.

Okay so what’s a reusable
snack bag and does this mean I need to wash out my plastic baggies every time I
use one?
To be honest, there will be
a good amount of re-washing and shaking out, but what you’ll be washing is the inside of your
fabulous little reusable sandwich or snack bag. I personally love the ones by
Bleu Roo.
They’re made of 100%
unbleached cotton, the inner liner is water and stain resistant nylon, no icky
plastics touching and leaking bad things into your food. The bags close securely
with Velcro and have a sweet hand stitched bird or fruit on the front.
I’ve been eyeing them out at
Green Depot where I go to buy my babies diapers every month and I finally
bought one the other day. I bring a homemade sandwich for my son every afternoon
after school and have been previously wrapping his sandwiches in parchment paper. I
stopped using sandwich bags a long time ago and this is the perfect alternative
to a disposable item.
Once you’ve run out of your
packet of plastic disposables, consider the environment, there’s a lot of
fishies out there swallowing up those baggies, so buy a reusable snack bag,
it’s a really excellent place to start going green.
Know of any other great
green items you think I should sell in my OpenSky Shop. Please let me know! I’m
always on the lookout for stylish green items for the urban mama.

It’s April and that means
Earth Day is coming right up. This month all my posts will specifically be
green from toys to clothing to body care. I wonder if I can find A Haute Mama
of The Week rocking organic maternity threads?
One of my all time favourite
green toy companies is Plan Toys. I’ve been buying their toys for six years
now. We have everything from food and play kitchen to baby toys, a ton of cars
and other transportation as well as a parking lot. I love Plan Toys for several
reasons: Being made of wood, there’s less detail, that is to say, there’s much
less attention to things like logos or stickers that you might find on plastic
toys. It has been very interesting watching my son play over the past years
with his wooden toys – he’s much more inventive and creative and makes up wild
and fabulous stories for all his “characters”. Yes, he does have a few Disney
Cars but he tends to stick to the race story line when playing with them. I
really believe his Plan Toys have fostered more inventive play. I also love the
fact that all their toys are 100% toxic free and made from recycled or
recyclable material.
A recent favourite addition
to our home is the Eco Charging Station (shown below). My son loves it and has since
developed an eye for spotting hybrid and EV cars on the road. It’s an easy way
to teach a child about energy alternatives and green transportation. The set
includes an “electric” charging station, an EV (electric vehicle) and a driver.
We also have the Eco Vehicles set which includes a segway and two EV’s. All so
fabulous, I think we'll just have to buy the new Recycling Set & Eco Street
Accessories that includes 4 solar-powered street lights!
What are your favourite green toys and are there any you think I should sell in my OpenSky shop?
